FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction is a hair transplant process that replaces lost or thinning hair by taking healthy follicles from a donor area of the head (usually the back and sides) and transplanting them to a thinning area of the head, such as the hairline or crown. It is the most advanced and minimum invasive hair restoration option due to less scarring and giving better results than other hair transplant methods.
The procedure is generally requested by patients who suffer from thinning hair or balding, but who still have enough hair to use for the transplant.
Advantages of the FUE method:
- No sutures and wound scars.
- Shorter duration of the procedure.
- After the procedure, patients return to daily life within a short period of time.
- No pain during and after the procedure.
In FUE hair transplants, there is minimal bleeding, and recovery is usually complete within seven days with almost no side effects. One of the things that you need is healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head, to serve as a donor area for follicles to be harvested from. Other factors, such as hair color, texture, and waviness or curliness, may also affect the cosmetic result.
FUE is a minimally invasive hair surgery procedure that is administered under local anesthetic, pain is minimized, and most patients do not feel anything at all. You will be conscious for the entire time that the hair transplant procedure is administered.
There will be some mild discomfort during the recovery process, but this only lasts around seven days. The risk of complications because of FUE is also extremely low.
How will the procedure go?
The FUE method is based on the fact that during the removal of units of hair follicles (grafts), instead of a scalpel, a special instrument with a micromotor is used. Such a tool with a micromotor has special tips with a diameter of 0.6-1.4 mm, which allow cutting the hair follicle from the upper layer of the skin in the form of a block with a hair in the center and using a special microtweezers, the follicular unit is removed, preventing any damage to the soft tissues located below. Each follicular unit contains 1-4 roots along with a hair. Before performing this procedure, the hair in the area from which the extraction will be performed is shaved so that the length of the hair is 1-2 mm. After local anesthesia both in the donor area and in the area intended for hair transplantation, the withdrawn follicular units are transferred one by one to the area without hair.
The transplant procedure can be performed in sessions following one after another or every other day. During each session, 1500-4500 follicular units can be removed, in other words, 3000-10000 hair transplants can be performed during 1 session. There is no need to wait between sessions, as is the case with classical hair transplant methods. In addition, there is no loss of sensitivity, bleeding and scarring of wounds in the donor area, and there is no need for suturing.
Within 1 week, complete healing of small holes in the area of removal of follicular units occurs without any traces. Faster healing of the donor area is due to the fact that the removal of a strip of skin with hair follicles is not performed on the back of the head.
